1. 1

Maputo is the capital city of , on the southeast coast of Africa. It is a port on the Indian Ocean, so ships and trade have long passed through it; much of the country’s business still turns on that harbour. English borrowed the name from Portuguese, which was the colonial language there. Older English books may still call the city Lourenço Marques, the name it had before independence; people on the ground now say Maputo. It is only a place name, always with a capital M. You meet it on maps, in the news, and in geography class, not as a word you conjugate or stretch.
