Manzanar is a large camp in the dry middle of California. During World War II, the United States government forced people whose families came from Japan — many of them American citizens — to leave their homes and live there, behind fences. They lost houses, farms, and shops. It is a place name in history books, and now a site where people go to remember. It is not a town people chose, and it is not in Japan. The government at the time called these places “relocation centers,” as if people had simply moved. Though actually the honest English most teachers use now is internment camp: a camp you are made to live in and cannot freely leave. The word is used with a serious, careful voice; it names a real injustice, not a holiday place.
