Manila, in this sense, is a strong light-brown or yellowish paper, the kind used for big office and old-style folders. People say a manila envelope for that stiff brown envelope you put documents in. The name comes from Manila, the capital of the Philippines: the paper was first made from a plant that grew there (often called Manila ). Though actually, a lot of what shops now sell as manila paper is just ordinary brown paper that looks the same — the place-name stuck, even when the old plant is gone from the recipe. In English the city is usually Manila with a capital M; the paper is often written manila with a small m. It is a quiet, practical word, not poetic. You will see it on , in offices, and in packing, not in love songs.
