Manhattan is the famous island in New York Bay, with the Hudson River on one side and the East River on the other. It is one of the five boroughs (big parts) of New York City — the part with the very tall buildings, busy streets, Central Park, and Wall Street. When films say “New York,” they often mean this island, though actually the city is much larger. Because it is a place name, it takes a capital M. People later borrowed the same name for a whisky cocktail and for the Manhattan Project; those are extra uses of the name, not extra meanings of the island itself.

組成Not English man + hat. Dutch settlers recorded an earlier form Manna-hata from the local Algonquian language (Unami / Munsee). The name is generally taken as a compound with Unami mënatay or Munsee munahan (“island”) plus another element — though scholars do not all tell the same story. An older report by John Heckewelder links it to woods good for making bows. Linguist Ives Goddard reads early forms such as Manna-hatta(n) as Munsee manaháhtaan (“place for gathering the wood to make bows”) and the locative manaháhteenk.
