A manger is a long open box or trough that horses, cows, and other farm animals eat from. The farmer puts hay or other food in it. You will hear the word most often in the Christmas story: there is no bed, so the baby is laid in a manger. In that use it feels old and church-like. On a working farm today, people more often say trough or feeder, but manger is still understood. Outside Christmas, farms, and children’s nativity plays, it is not a common everyday word.
