  1. 1漫畫（特指日本漫畫；口語也直接說 manga）

    Manga are Japanese comic books and long picture-stories. In Japan they are not only for children. There is manga for teenagers and for adults too, about school, romance, sport, work, history, horror, and jokes, not only fights and heroes.

    You usually read the pictures from right to left, the same way as Japanese writing. That feels backwards at first if you grew up with English books. Faces often have very large eyes; that is a common style, not a rule for every artist.

    English kept the Japanese word. It is widely used now, especially by younger readers, and it does not sound childish in the way “comics” sometimes can. People sometimes stretch manga to cover the films and series that grow out of the books; the stricter word for those moving pictures is anime.

    Chinese comics and Korean comics are cousins, not the same thing.

From Japanese 漫画 (manga), from Middle Chinese 漫 'unrestrained' + 畫 'drawing'; after an 1814 book by Hokusai.
