A mandrill is a large monkey that lives in the forests of West Africa. The male is famous for his face: bright red and blue, almost like paint, with a yellow beard. They spend a lot of time on the ground as well as in trees, in groups, and they are among the most colourful of all . The name is literally “man-drill.” Drill here is another West African monkey, not the tool you make holes with. An older English name was man-tiger, which we no longer use.
