    Managua is the capital city of , in Central America. It sits by a lake that shares the name. In 1972 a strong earthquake badly damaged the city; much of the old centre came down, and the city that grew back is more spread out, with a different shape from before. It is the country’s main political and business centre. English takes the name from Spanish. Stress the middle: mə-NAH-gwa. Though actually, sometimes mix up the city and the country — is the whole country; Managua is the capital inside it.
