A manageress is a woman in charge of a business, especially a shop or a restaurant. The word was common in British English for much of the last century: the manageress of the café, the manageress of the store. Though actually, many people now find it old-fashioned, and some find it unkind, because it marks the woman as a special kind of manager instead of just a manager. Today a woman who runs a shop is usually called a manager, the same word as for a man. You will still meet manageress in older books, old signs, and older speakers. The -ess ending did the same job on actress and waitress; those have lasted longer, but manageress has mostly faded.
