    Mammalian is the word you put with another word to mean “of ” or “like a mammal”: the mammalian brain, mammalian milk, a mammalian species. Scientists also use it as a noun for a mammal itself (“mammalians” in that dry, textbook way), but in ordinary English the noun you want is almost always mammal; mammalian prefers to sit in front of something. It sounds like the classroom and the lab, not like home talk. If you say “a mammalian”, people will understand you mean that kind of animal, though it will sound a little stiff.
