Malthusian describes the ideas of Thomas Malthus, a British economist (1766–1834) who wrote about how many people the world can feed. He argued that the number of people grows very fast, while food grows more slowly — so if nothing checked us (illness, war, or people choosing to have fewer children), there would not be enough food. Today the word is used for a dark view that more people will outrun food, water, or land, and sometimes for policies that try to slow population growth. It can be an adjective (a Malthusian warning) or a noun for a person who holds that view. People still argue about how right he was: we grow far more food than in his day, but the worry about limits has never quite gone away.
