- 1馬爾他（地中海島國）。台灣作「馬爾他」，中國大陸作「馬耳他」。
Malta is a small country in the Mediterranean Sea, south of . It is not one rock: the country is a handful of islands. The three that people name are Malta (the big one, which gives the country its name), Gozo, and tiny Comino. The capital is Valletta. Britain ruled Malta for a long time, and that still shows — English is widely used, many British visitors go there on holiday, and Malta belongs to the Commonwealth (the family of countries with old ties to Britain). It became an independent republic in 1964 and joined the European Union in 2004. It is one of the smallest EU countries, and almost everyone lives packed onto those few islands.
組成The English name was borrowed from Italian and Maltese Malta, from Arabic, from Latin Melita, from Ancient Greek Melítē. Some people link that Greek name to méli, “honey,” as if the island were named for its bees; scholars are not sure that is why the island was called that. Another idea is that it transcribes a Phoenician word for a harbour. We do not know which story is right.
