A mallard is a common wild duck, the ordinary duck you see on park lakes, ponds, and rivers across much of the north of the world. The male is the one people picture: a shiny green head, a yellow bill, a white ring on the neck, and a brown chest. The female is brown, which helps her hide on the nest; both have a little blue patch on the wing. Mallard is the name of this species, not a word for every duck — a white farm duck is usually a different bird, though actually some farm ducks were bred from mallards long ago. People often feed them bread, which is not good for them. The same word is also used as a family name, taken from the bird.
組成From Middle English malard, from Old French malard, from male, masle (“male”) + -ard. It first named the male wild duck. Cognate with Medieval Latin maslardus, mallardus. The surname is the bird’s name used as a family name.
