A malingerer is a person who pretends to be ill so they do not have to work, go to school, or do a duty they want to escape. The verb is : it is the pretence, not real sickness, and not mere . You hear it most about jobs and the army — a soldier who fakes a fever to avoid duty is the classic picture. It is a rather formal, slightly old word, and it is : if you call someone a malingerer, you are saying they are faking it. Though actually, in real life the line can be messy. Some people get labelled malingerers when they have an illness that does not show, and a teacher or a boss is only guessing.
