Malaga (in Spanish written Málaga) is a city and port in southern Spain, on the Mediterranean. It is the big city of the Costa del Sol, a stretch of coast that British and other northern European tourists have visited for decades, and where many older British people have gone to live after they stop work, chasing sun and cheaper winters. The city itself is older and more ordinary than the beach towns around it: a harbour, an airport that feeds the whole coast, Picasso’s birthplace, and hot summers. English speakers usually say MAL-uh-guh, without the Spanish stress on the first á. There are also smaller American places and a surname Malaga, taken from the Spanish city; those are namesakes, not extra meanings of the word in a learner’s dictionary.
