A majorette is a girl — the word was built that way — who marches with a band and spins a long stick, a baton, in time with the music. You see her at parades, school shows, and sports days, often out in front, tossing the baton high and catching it again. The name comes from drum major, the leader of a marching band; majorette started as drum majorette, with -ette marking a smaller or female form. It can sound a bit old now. Plenty of groups still have baton twirlers, and they are not always girls, but the word itself still points to that parade picture. It is not the same as a cheerleader: cheerleaders shout and dance to support a team; a majorette is there with the band, and the baton is the point.
