    Maj. is the written short form of Major when Major is a military rank — an army, air-force, or marine officer one step above a captain. You see it before a name on letters, lists, and news reports: Maj. Lin, Maj. Thompson. People say the full word major when they speak; they write Maj. to save space. The full stop is the older British way of marking an abbreviation. This Maj. is not your university major (the subject you study), not major meaning ‘important’, and not major in music (a kind of scale). Those share a spelling in English, but they are not this way in running text.
