A maisonette is a home inside a larger building that has two floors of its own and, importantly, its own front door. You come in from the street or a shared walkway, then go upstairs to the bedrooms, as you would in a small house — though actually you still share walls, and often a roof, with other families. It is a British word more than an American one; Americans are more likely to say duplex. It is not a mansion, and it is not a house standing alone in a garden. Think of a small two-floor flat that wants to feel like a house. In some streets the upstairs maisonette has its own stairs from the pavement, with another home sitting underneath.
