1. 1

Maine is a state in the north-east of the United States, up on the Atlantic, against the Canadian border. It is the biggest of the New England states, but not many people live there. People know it for woods, lakes, a rocky coast, lighthouses, and lobster. Winters are long and cold; summers on the coast are the time visitors come. The capital is Augusta; the city you hear about more is Portland. Though actually, the name has nothing to do with the English word main (most important), even though they sound the same. French explorers named it after Maine, an old province in France.

組成The US state is from French Maine, named by French explorers after the province in France. From Old French Cemaine, from Latin Cenomania, from the Gaulish Cenomani people. The name was later heard as ce (this) + Maine, and the ce- was lost by the 1100s. Not the same word as English main.
