Maidenly describes the way a young woman is expected to act in old stories: shy about her body, quiet about sex, modest, a little easily embarrassed. It belongs to a time when maiden meant a girl who had not married, and when that shyness was treated as a virtue. Today the word sounds old-fashioned, even a bit like a joke. If you call someone maidenly now, you may mean she is sweetly shy — or you may be teasing her for acting as if she still lives in that old world. It is not a compliment every young woman wants. You will meet it in novels, period films, and sometimes in mock-serious writing; you will almost never hear it in ordinary talk about a real person, unless someone is being literary on purpose.
