A maharani is an Indian princess or queen. Often she is the wife of a maharajah; sometimes she is a ruling queen in her own right. Like maharajah, it is mainly a historical title now, used in stories, museums, and writing about old princely states. It is a respectful royal word, not a casual nickname. Though actually, English speakers who know maharajah sometimes forget this feminine form exists, and say “the maharajah's wife” instead — which is clear, but maharani is the title itself.
