You'll mostly meet 'magnum' in two situations. First, a magnum is a large wine or champagne bottle, holding about one and a half liters — twice a normal bottle — often used for special celebrations. Second, 'magnum' appears in gun and ammunition names (like '.44 Magnum') to mean a more powerful version of a normal cartridge — you've probably heard this from movies even if you don't know guns. There's also the phrase 'magnum opus', borrowed whole from Latin, meaning a person's single greatest piece of work, usually in art or writing.
