A magnifier is an object that makes things look bigger, so you can see small details. The everyday one is a magnifying glass: a round lens with a handle. Jewellers, stamp collectors, and people with tired eyes use them. Computers and phones may have a screen magnifier too — software that what is on the screen. Though actually, in ordinary speech people say “magnifying glass” more often than “magnifier”; magnifier sounds a bit like a product name or a technical word. It is not a microscope (a stronger tool for things too small for the eye) and not a telescope (for things far away).

組成magnify + -er (the tool that does the magnifying). Magnify comes through French from Latin magnificāre, from magnificus: magnus “great” plus a piece meaning “make.”
