The Magnificat is a song of praise to God. The words are Mary's words in the New Testament, after she learns she will be the mother of Jesus. Churches still sing it, especially in the evening, in Catholic, Anglican, and some Lutheran services. People write it with a capital M because it is the name of that one song, not a common describing word. The name is simply the first word of the old Latin version — Magnificat anima mea Dominum, “My soul makes the Lord great.” Though actually, in church you may hear it in Latin, in English, or in Chinese; it is the same prayer. It is a church word. You will not hear it on the street, and it is not a fancy way to say magnificent.
