A magneto is a small machine that uses one or more magnets to make electricity. For a long time, car engines, , and small planes used a magneto to make the spark that lights the fuel. The tidy dictionary still says “especially in the engine of a car,” and that was true for older cars — though actually most modern cars have moved on to other systems, and you now hear the word more with small engines, lawnmowers, and aircraft. It is a technical, workshop word, not an everyday one. If you only know magnet, this is the next step: a magnet doing a job, making power.
