A magnate is a person who has become very rich and powerful in one kind of business — oil, steel, newspapers, shipping, property. News writers love the word: “a media magnate,” “a steel magnate.” It suggests not just money but weight: this person can move a whole industry. It is a formal, newspaper word. You would not call your rich uncle a magnate unless you were joking. People stretch it a little now, to sports-team owners and tech bosses, but it still wants a field you can name. It is not the same word as magnet, though they look close and sound close.
