If you are magnanimous, you are kind and generous, especially toward someone you have power over — someone you have beaten in a fight, a game, an election, or an argument. You do not keep pressing. You may even help them keep their pride. The word is rather formal and sounds a bit high; it belongs in writing and careful speech more than in the playground. Teachers and news writers like it. Ordinary talk is more likely to use “decent,” “generous,” or “big of you.” Being magnanimous is not about giving gifts in general. It is about what you do when you could hurt someone and you choose not to.
