    The Maghreb is the western part of North Africa, along the Mediterranean. This dictionary names Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. The people there are mainly Arab and Berber. Arabic is widely used; Berber languages are too, and French is still common in many schools and offices. Though actually, not everyone draws the same map: some lists leave Libya out, and some add . The name means “the west” — the land where the sun sets, seen from the old Arab east. It is a region name, like “the ”, not the name of one country.
