A mafioso is a member of the Mafia — the secret crime groups that began in and later appeared in places such as the United States. English borrowed the word from Italian and kept its shape. Newspapers and films love it, so it can sound dramatic, even flashy. In careful English, keep it for a real member of that world, not for every tough-looking man. Though actually, Italian speakers sometimes stretch it to mean a man who acts as if he belongs to that world. The usual plural is mafiosi; you will hear “mafiosos” too, but teachers often prefer the Italian plural.
