Mafeking is the old English name of a town in the north of South Africa. Today the town is called Mafikeng, and you will also see Mahikeng — same place, newer spellings. English remembers the old name because of the Siege of Mafeking in 1899–1900, during a war in South Africa between British soldiers and the (Dutch-speaking people living there). A siege is when an army surrounds a town and waits. British soldiers held the town for 217 days. When more British forces arrived, the Relief of Mafeking made people in Britain celebrate in the streets — so loudly that the name became a famous picture of wild public joy, and English even made a short-lived verb, maffick, meaning to celebrate wildly. Though actually, Mafeking is a place name, not a person's name, and not a word for a party. You will almost only meet it in history books.
