Maestro is an Italian word English borrowed for a master, especially a master of music. A famous leader of an orchestra, a great violin teacher, someone who music and is treated with deep respect — that is a maestro. In a concert hall, people may call that leader maestro as a title, the way they say sir. Though actually, English speakers now stretch it: a cook, a football manager, anyone brilliantly good at a craft might be called a maestro, half in praise and half in play. It still feels a little foreign and a little grand: warmer than boss, showier than teacher. It comes from the same Latin word as English master, and also as German meister.
