Madrid is the capital of Spain, in the centre of the country. It sits inland and high, drier than the coast. The government sits there. People also know it for football, for art museums, and for staying out late. You use it as a place name, not as a common noun: you go to Madrid, you fly into Madrid. English took the name as it is, from Spanish. Though actually, often guess it must be on the sea, because so many famous Spanish cities are. Madrid is not. People sometimes say Madrid a little loosely for the Spanish government, the way they say Washington for the American one — but the first meaning is the city itself. It is a proper name, so it keeps a capital letter.
