A madrasa is a school in the Muslim world. The Arabic word just means school — a place where you go to study — so in some countries it is an ordinary school, not a special religious one. Though actually, when English speakers say madrasa they usually mean a school that teaches Islam: the Muslim holy book, Arabic, and religious law, sometimes with other subjects too. A madrasa may stand next to a mosque, but it is not the mosque. One is for prayer; the other is for lessons. You will also see madrasah; it is the same word, only the spelling wobbles. The word itself is quiet and neutral. It names a kind of school. It does not carry a judgement, even when news writing piles extra feeling onto it.
