Madras is a city and port on the south-east coast of India, the capital of Tamil Nadu, a state in the south. Though actually, that is the old English name. People who live there, and maps today, call the same city Chennai. The city did not move; only the name in official use did. You still meet Madras in history books, on old maps, and in older English writing. English also used the name for a light cotton with bright checks — a madras shirt — and for a hot curry in British restaurants. Those grew from the city, but they are not the city. Nobody is quite sure where the name Madras comes from; it may come from Madraspattinam.
