Made-to-order things are made for one particular customer, after that person asks for them, rather than sitting in a shop already finished. Clothing and furniture are the usual examples: you choose the fabric, the size, the colour, and they build it. It may be cut to your body (then it is also made-to-measure), but it need not be — a made-to-order sofa might be a standard model in the cloth you picked.
Made-to-order things Made-to-order 的東西,after that person asks for them是在那位客人開口要之後,are made for one particular customer才為那一位特定的顧客做出來,rather than sitting in a shop already finished而不是已經做好、擺在店裡。Clothing and furniture衣服和家具 are the usual examples是最常見的例子:you choose你挑 the fabric布料、the size尺寸、the colour顏色,and they build it然後他們做出來。It may be cut to your body它可能照你的身形裁 (then it is also made-to-measure那它同時也是 made-to-measure),but it need not be但不必然如此——a made-to-order sofa一張訂做的沙發 might be可能只是 in the cloth you picked用你挑的布做的 a standard model標準款。
The opposite is ready-made or off-the-shelf. British English also has for the high-end, “we make this to your request” idea; made-to-order is the plainer cousin of that.
The opposite is相反的說法是 ready-made or off-the-shelf ready-made 或 off-the-shelf。British English英式英文 also has bespoke還有 bespoke 這個字,for the high-end, “we make this to your request” idea留給高級的、「我們照您的要求做」的那種概念;made-to-order is the plainer cousin of that而 made-to-order 是它比較樸素的表親。
In restaurants, made to order (often without ) just means cooked when you order it, not sitting under a lamp; that is the same idea in food. The form is the adjective you put before a noun: made-to-order furniture.
In restaurants在餐廳裡,made to order (often without hyphens常常不加連字號) just means只是說 cooked when you order it你點了才煮,not sitting under a lamp不是放在保溫燈下等;that is the same idea in food這在食物上是同一個概念。The hyphenated form加連字號的形式 is the adjective是形容詞,you put before a noun放在名詞前面:made-to-order furniture訂做的家具。
組成made + to + order: made according to someone’s order, i.e. their request. Parallel in spirit to bespoke (“made to a spoken request”), but not built from the same pieces.
