Madame is a polite way to address or talk about a French-speaking woman, especially a married one — the French match for Mrs or ma’am. In English we keep the French word when the setting is French: a French teacher, a letter to a French woman, a restaurant that wants a little French flavour. You can say Madame on its own, or Madame plus her family name (Madame Dupont). The usual short written form in French is Mme. It feels formal and a bit foreign in English; among English speakers, Mrs, Ms, or ma’am is the everyday choice. Older books say Madame is for a married woman and for an one. Younger French speakers often use Madame for adult women whether they are married or not, because asking can feel nosy. English also has madam, which looks almost the same: that is the English word, not the French title.
組成Borrowed from French madame, from Old French ma dame (“my lady”). English madam and Italian Madonna started from the same idea and are sister words.
