Madagascan means “from Madagascar” or “of Madagascar,” the large island country in the Indian Ocean, off the southeast coast of Africa. As a noun, a Madagascan is a person from that country. As an adjective it describes people, animals, food, or culture from there: Madagascan wildlife, a Madagascan story. The island is famous for animals that do not live wild anywhere else, such as the lemur. The capital of the country is Antananarivo. Though actually, many careful writers prefer Malagasy for the people and the language; Madagascan is still used, especially about animals and in older or more general English. Do not use Madagascan as the name of the country itself — that name is Madagascar.
