A mackintosh is a coat you wear to keep the rain off — especially the old British kind made with rubbery cloth that water cannot get through. People also it to mac. Charles patented that cloth in 1823; it was once a trademark. The extra k in the coat word came later; his own name was . Though actually, many British speakers now say or waterproof for any modern jacket, and keep mackintosh for the classic rubbery coat, or as a slightly old, slightly word. American speakers rarely use it. It is not the Apple computer.
