1. 1

A mackerel is a sea fish with dark stripes, flesh, and a strong taste. People grill it, smoke it, or buy it in tins. The oil is part of why cooks like it — and why it spoils fast if it is not kept cold. Though actually, shops in different countries may put the name on more than one related fish, so the exact animal can shift a little. It is an ordinary food word, not a fancy restaurant word. The English comes from Middle English, from Old French maquerel; nobody is sure where the French word came from before that.
