An — a small, very strong Italian coffee — with only a little milk, often just a spoon of foam. The milk is not there to make a big milky drink; it is there to mark the black coffee. That is the Italian idea. Though actually, what many students in Taiwan order as a macchiato, especially a caramel macchiato from a chain café, is a tall sweet milk coffee with vanilla and caramel. That drink borrowed the name. If you ask in a small Italian-style café, you may get a tiny cup. If you ask at a big chain, you may get a large sweet cup. Say which one you want. In English the Italian word is usually kept as it is; people do not translate it. It is a café word, a little fancy.
組成From Italian caffè macchiato, “stained coffee.” Macchiato means “stained, marked,” from Latin maculātus, from macula “a stain, a spot.” The drop of milk is the stain.
