組成From Italian maccaroni, old plural of maccarone (now usually maccheroni). The deeper origin is not settled: some derive it from late Byzantine Greek makaría, a barley food, from Ancient Greek mákar “blessed”; others from Italian maccare “to crush,” from Latin maccāre. We should not pretend one story has won. The old “fashionable man” sense in English probably comes from a London Macaroni Club, not from Italian words for a fool.
