The M1 is not a kind of road. It is the name of one particular British : a wide, fast road between cities, with no traffic lights, rather like a Taiwan 國道. This one runs from London north towards Leeds, in the north of England. British people say “the M1” the way people here say 國道一號 — you drive on it, you get stuck on it, and you hear it in the traffic news. Coach drivers, weather reports, and ordinary families all use the name. It belongs to British English. An American talking about a road in the United States would say interstate or freeway, and would only say M1 if they meant this same British road.
