A lyre is an old string instrument: a U-shaped frame with strings across it, held in the arms and played with the fingers. It is smaller and lighter than a harp, which usually stands on the floor. In ancient Greece it belonged to poets and to the god Apollo; the sounding box was often said to be a tortoise shell. You meet the word in history, myth, and music class, and in pictures of old Greece. It is a , classical word — you do not ask a pop star if they play the lyre. Later English lyric and lyrical grew from this: songs that were once of the lyre.

Doublet of lira, lyra, and Lyra — lira here is the instrument name sharing that Greek word, not the old Italian coin.
