A lynx is a wild cat of the northern forests — Europe, Asia, North America. School books sometimes say it has no tail. That is a little too tidy. It does have a tail, only a very short one, so from far away you can think the tail is missing. What you notice first are the black on the ear tips, a thick ruff of fur around the face, and huge that help it walk on snow. It hunts mostly at night, and people have long said it sees in the dark; that is why the old name was tied to brightness and shining eyes. It is a nature word, not a pet word. The animal died out in Britain in the Middle Ages, and the older English name with it; this Greek-Latin name stayed. Writers also stretch lynx to a faint star group: an in 1687 named it Lynx and said you need a lynx's eyes to see it.
組成From Middle English lynx (also linx, lynce), from Latin lynx, from Ancient Greek λύγξ (lúnx), from an old root *lewk- (“white; light; bright”), because of the cat's seemingly glowing eyes and its sight in the dark. Doublet of onza and ounce. It displaced older English los / Middle English lusk, from Old English lox, after the animal died out in Britain. The constellation Lynx is the same Latin word; Johannes Hevelius named it in 1687.
