A lynching is the act itself: the killing of someone by a crowd, with no trial, often by hanging. It is the noun that sits beside the verb lynch. Historians talk about lynchings when they write about racial violence in the United States; news writers use it for the same kind of mob killing in other places too. The word stays formal and grim. Though actually, you may hear “a lynching” used loosely for a pile-on in the papers or online; that is the same stretch some people make with the verb, and it can sound as if it makes light of the real crime. If you mean the historical killing, say so ; if you mean angry talk, a clearer, smaller word is usually kinder.
