A lychee is a small round fruit. Outside is a thin, rough, pink-brown shell you peel with your fingers; inside is sweet white flesh around one brown stone. English borrowed the name from southern Chinese, which is why you hear more than one pronunciation: some people say it like “lie-chee,” others like “lee-chee,” and both are used. You find lychees fresh in season, , or dried (those are darker and chewier), and the name also labels the flavour in drinks and sweets. Though actually, older packets may say litchi; that is the same fruit, not a different one.
