A lyceum is a building where people gather for talks, concerts, and public meetings — a hall for listening, not for sport. The word feels a little grand and old-fashioned; you meet it on the names of halls and in history more than in everyday chat. The first Lyceum was a training ground near Athens where Aristotle taught, so the English word still carries a faint school-and-culture smell. In the United States in the 1800s, “the lyceum” was also a whole evening-class movement: speakers travelled from town to town and taught adults. Though actually, the French cousin lycée is just the ordinary word for a secondary school — same old Greek name, very different building. In English, lyceum stays the hall.
組成From Latin Lyceum, from Ancient Greek Λύκειον (Lúkeion), the place near Athens where Aristotle taught. The Greek name is linked to Λύκειος, later tied to Apollo, to “light,” and also mixed up with the wolf (λύκος) and the land of Lycia.
