A lunchroom is a large room in a school or office where people sit and eat. It is mainly an American word. In Britain people more often say canteen or cafeteria; cafeteria is common in American schools too, and is often the same room. The lunchroom may serve food, or people may bring their own. It is a place-word, slightly institutional — school, factory, office — not a café you choose for fun. Though actually, many Taiwan schools have no separate lunchroom at all: students eat at their desks. So when an American story says 'in the lunchroom', picture a big shared eating hall, not your classroom. It is not as grand as a restaurant and not as private as a kitchen.
