Luftwaffe is a German name that English borrowed for an air force. In English, 'the Luftwaffe' almost always means Germany's air force in the Second World War — the planes and the people who flew them for Nazi Germany. History books, films, and games use it that way, and it feels serious, not . Though actually, the tidy dictionary line 'World Wars I and II' is a bit too tidy: in the First World War Germany's air force had a different name. The Luftwaffe as this name belongs especially to the 1930s and 1940s. After the war the name came back in West Germany, and today's German air force is still Luftwaffe in German. In English, if you say only 'the Luftwaffe' with no extra words, people will still hear the war years, above all 1939 to 1945.
