A Luddite is someone who is against modern machines and new ways of doing things. The word starts in real history: in early 1800s England, some textile workers smashed the new frames that were taking their work. They were said to follow Ned Ludd, a legendary figure — he may never have been one clear real person. Today people use Luddite much more loosely, and often with a smile: “I still print the map; I’m a Luddite.” That everyday use is about disliking phones, apps, and updates, not about breaking factory machines. In serious writing it can still mean a deeper refusal of new technology. It is often a bit teasing, sometimes unfair — the original Luddites were fighting for their jobs, not just being old-fashioned.
